What are the differences between monocots and dicots

The difference between monocot and dicot is simply lying in their names as ‘mono’ means one ‘di’ means two and cot for cotyledons which simply means that monocot plants possess one cotyledon while dicot plants possess two cotyledons. monocots and dicots are two diversifications of flowering plants.

In simple words, the cotyledon is the first part that pops out of the growing seed beneath the soil which is a very tiny leaflet. the seed types that pop out a single leaflet at a time of growth are monocots. Similarly, the seeds that pop out two tiny leaflets at a time on the time of growth are known as dicots.

Monocot Dicot
1. Monocots possess single cotyledon. Dicots possess double cotyledon.
2. Possess fibrous roots beneath the soil and branched veins in leaves. Have non-fibrous roots with parallel veins lying in the leaves.
3. Leaf type is known as isobilateral. Leaf type is known as dorsiventral.
4. Garlic, onion, grass, wheat, palm, sugarcane, banana tree, daffodils, millets, and corn are a few examples of monocots. Pear, apple, beans, and cauliflower are a few examples of dicots.
5. To manage water-loss, there are bulliform cells on leave surfaces. Bulliform cells are absent on the leave of dicots.
6. Petals on flowers are present in the sets of three. Petals on flowers are present in the sets of five or four.
7. On the basis of the presence or absence of wood, they are categorized into two types, woody, and herbaceous. These are herbaceous.
8. These are known as amphistomatous as there is the presence of stomata on both upper and lower surfaces of leaves. These are known as astomatous as they only have stomata present on the leaf’s upper surface.
9. Stems have scattered vascular bundles. Stems have arranged vascular bundles in the form of a ring.
10. Due to the absence of a cambium, secondary growth is also absent. The cambium is present so the secondary growth is also present.
